It appears Gov. Sarah Palin was for the “Bridge to Nowhere” before she was against it, and only abandoned the project when the federal well ran dry.

Alaska abandons controversial Ketchikan bridge project

JUNEAU, Alaska — Some called it a bridge to the future. Others called it the bridge to nowhere.

The bridge is going nowhere.

On Friday, the state of Alaska officially abandoned the controversial project in Ketchikan that became a national symbol of federal pork-barrel spending.

It closes a chapter that has brought the state reams of ridicule, but it also leaves open wounds in a community that fought for decades to get federal help.

“We went through political hot water — tons of it — and not just nationally but internationally,” said Ketchikan-Gateway Borough Mayor Joe Williams. “We have nothing to show for it.”

The $398 million bridge would have connected Ketchikan to its airport on a sparsely populated nearby Gravina island.

“We will continue to look for options for Ketchikan to allow better access to the island,” Gov. Sarah Palin said. “The concentration is not going to be on a $400 million bridge.”

Palin has directed the state Department of Transportation to find the most “fiscally responsible” alternative for access to the airport.

Palin said without federal funding, the state cannot afford a bridge, so the best option would be to upgrade the current ferry system.

Local officials called the decision premature, saying it came without warning.

“For somebody who touts process and transparency in getting projects done, I’m disappointed and taken aback,” said Ketchikan Republican Rep. Kyle Johansen.

“This is contrary to about every statement she has ever made,” he said. “We worked 30 years to get funding for this priority project.”

In her speech the other day where Sen. John McCain introduced her as his running mate, Palin said -

I’ve championed reform to end the abuses of earmark spending by Congress. In fact, I told Congress thanks, but no thanks, on that “bridge to nowhere.” If our state wanted a bridge, I said, we’d build it ourselves.

In cancelling the bridge project, she actually said this:

“The federal government is less and less interested in continuing to fund these projects, she said. “It can’t be a state priority for DOT when we have much-needed road and bridge improvements. Our intention is to work with the community to find a sensible and efficient shuttle connection, a better ferry service.”

The bridge project, when it was cancelled, was $329 million short of full funding, according to Palin’s cancellation statement.

The so-called “Bridge to Nowhere” was to link Ketchikan, on Revillagigedo Island, to its airport on Gravina Island.

September 21, 2007, Juneau, Alaska – Governor Sarah Palin today directed the Department of Transportation and Public Facilities to look for the most fiscally responsible alternative for access to the Ketchikan airport and Gravina Island instead of proceeding any further with the proposed $398 million bridge.

“Ketchikan desires a better way to reach the airport, but the $398 million bridge is not the answer,” said Governor Palin. “Despite the work of our congressional delegation, we are about $329 million short of full funding for the bridge project, and it’s clear that Congress has little interest in spending any more money on a bridge between Ketchikan and Gravina Island,” Governor Palin added. “Much of the public’s attitude toward Alaska bridges is based on inaccurate portrayals of the projects here. But we need to focus on what we can do, rather than fight over what has happened.” The Department of Transportation has approximately $36 million in federal funds that will become available for other projects with the shutdown of the Gravina Island bridge project. Governor Palin has directed Commissioner Leo von Scheben to review transportation projects statewide to prepare a list of possible uses for the funds, while the department also looks for a more affordable answer for Gravina Island access.

“There is no question we desperately need to construct new roads in this state, including in Southeast Alaska, where skyrocketing costs for the Alaska Marine Highway System present an impediment to the state’s budget and the region’s economy,” said von Scheben.

“The original purpose of this project was to improve access to Gravina Island, and we will continue to work with the community to help them attain that goal,” von Scheben said.

The commissioner said his department would continue to work with local officials to discuss future plans for development of Gravina Island.

With the coming of spring in the nation’s capital, Congress has begun its annual ritual of producing a federal budget.

While Congressional earmarks represent less than 1 percent of the federal budget, a much higher percentage of the appropriations debate focuses on this topic.

One reason for this is several controversial earmarks and election-year politics. Another is that earmarks have become a metaphor for the federal budget generally. It’s a lot easier to talk about earmarks than to address difficult budget issues, such as burgeoning domestic entitlement programs and defense spending.

Earlier this year, President Bush and the congressional leadership announced that the total number and dollar amount of earmarks must be reduced significantly.

The Palin administration has responded to this message by requesting 31 earmarks, down from 54 last year. Of these, 27 involve continuing or previous appropriations and four are new. The total dollar amount of these requests has been reduced from about $550 million in the previous year to just less than $200 million.

Further, the governor has insisted that each Alaska request must demonstrate an important federal purpose and strong public support.

We also have heard that, wherever possible, a state or local match should be provided. The state’s budget requests incorporate this principle.

So, it is important to note there is no longer a “free lunch” at the federal level. Most federal requests have state or local budget consequences as well.

Congressional earmarks for roads and bridges have received much attention in Congress and have become a principal impetus for reform. Unfortunately, Alaska has featured prominently in this discussion.

The Palin administration has responded to this unwanted attention in a number of ways. Certain previous decisions concerning transportation earmarks are being re-examined. Currently, the Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities is conducting an audit to determine the status of all recent earmarks.

Palin has said the state can either respond to the changing circumstances in Congress or stick its head in the sand. We believe that by recognizing the necessity for change, we can enhance the state’s credibility in the appropriations process and in other areas of federal policy as well.

The governor is very much aware of the importance of the federal budget to virtually every Alaskan. In responding to the new realities, we are not abandoning earmarks altogether but are seeking to constrain and document them in the ways discussed here.

Michael Moore’s Open Letter to God

Michael Moore got some GOPer’s panties in a wad with comments about God and hurricanes and proof of one thing or another.

Apparently, from the whining in the elephant gallery, God and the weather are the exclusive domain of right wing. It seems some (perhaps those who developed the GOP education platform) think you can’t spell GOD without GOP.

You know, it seems God only speaks to right-wing, fundamentalist Christians to let them know what God wants. No wait, fundamentalist, jihad Muslims claim the same thing. Is there a connection?

Anyway, Moore is fighting back. The following is qouted in full, as it is sure to be picked apart and distorted. You also can find a note of reference to GOP and Katrina here.

An Open Letter to God, from Michael Moore

Dear God,

The other night, the Rev. James Dobson’s ministry asked all believers to pray for a storm on Thursday night so that the Obama acceptance speech outdoors in Denver would have to be canceled.

I see that You have answered Rev. Dobson’s prayers — except the storm You have sent to earth is not over Denver, but on its way to New Orleans! In fact, You have scheduled it to hit Louisiana at exactly the moment that George W. Bush is to deliver his speech at the Republican National Convention.

Now, heavenly Father, we all know You have a great sense of humor and impeccable timing. To send a hurricane on the third anniversary of the Katrina disaster AND right at the beginning of the Republican Convention was, at first blush, a stroke of divine irony. I don’t blame You, I know You’re angry that the Republicans tried to blame YOU for Katrina by calling it an “Act of God” — when the truth was that the hurricane itself caused few casualties in New Orleans. Over a thousand people died because of the mistakes and neglect caused by humans, not You.

Some of us tried to help after Katrina hit, while Bush ate cake with McCain and twiddled his thumbs. I closed my office in New York and sent my entire staff down to New Orleans to help. I asked people on my website to contribute to the relief effort I organized — and I ended up sending over two million dollars in donations, food, water, and supplies (collected from thousands of fans) to New Orleans while Bush’s FEMA ice trucks were still driving around Maine three weeks later.

But this past Thursday night, the Washington Post reported that the Republicans had begun making plans to possibly postpone the convention. The AP had reported that there were no shelters set up in New Orleans for this storm, and that the levee repairs have not been adequate. In other words, as the great Ronald Reagan would say, “There you go again!”

So the last thing John McCain and the Republicans needed was to have a split-screen on TVs across America: one side with Bush and McCain partying in St. Paul, and on the other side of the screen, live footage of their Republican administration screwing up once again while New Orleans drowns.

So, yes, You have scared the Jesus, Mary and Joseph out of them, and more than a few million of your followers tip their hats to You.

But now it appears that You haven’t been having just a little fun with Bush & Co. It appears that Hurricane Gustav is truly heading to New Orleans and the Gulf coast. We hear You, O Lord, loud and clear, just as we did when Rev. Falwell said You made 9/11 happen because of all those gays and abortions. We beseech You, O Merciful One, not to punish us again as Pat Robertson said You did by giving us Katrina because of America’s “wholesale slaughter of unborn children.” His sentiments were echoed by other Republicans in 2005.

So this is my plea to you: Don’t do this to Louisiana again. The Republicans got your message. They are scrambling and doing the best they can to get planes, trains and buses to New Orleans so that everyone can get out. They haven’t sent the entire Louisiana National Guard to Iraq this time — they are already patrolling the city streets. And, in a nod to I don’t know what, Bush’s head of FEMA has named a man to help manage the federal government’s response. His name is W. Michael Moore. I kid you not, heavenly Father. They have sent a man with both my name AND W’s to help save the Gulf Coast.

So please God, let the storm die out at sea. It’s done enough damage already. If you do this one favor for me, I promise not to invoke your name again. I’ll leave that to the followers of Rev. Dobson and to those gathering this week in St. Paul.

McCAIN GOT PROSTITUTES NOT PRISON

What worries a small group of GOP Senators and Congressmen even more is a deep and dark skeletal secret in McCain’s glorified past to which they are privy, and which the Clintons will use to blackmail him. They have been having discussions with a Russian whom we’ll call “T” for Translator. T’s father was the Soviet military intelligence officer who ran the “Hanoi Hilton” prison holding captured Americans during the Vietnam War. One of those prisoners was John McCain…

McCain was kept at the Hanoi Hilton from December 1969 until his release, along with all the remaining POWs, in March of 1973. During this time, T translated all the Vietnamese interrogators’ notes and reports regarding John McCain.

According to T, they reveal that McCain had made an “accommodation” with his captors, and in exchange, T’s father saw that he was provided with an apartment in Hanoi and the services of two prostitutes. Upon returning to his prison cell, he would say he had been held in solitary confinement. That may be why so many of his fellow prisoners said later they saw so little of him at Hoa Loa.

The notes and reports written in Vietnamese were sent to Moscow, where T was a now a college student, for T’s translation into Russian, then placed into GRU archives. That’s where they stayed until 1991. Late that year, as the Soviet Union was collapsing, the CIA and the GRU made a deal for a document swap.

All of what it involved, T doesn’t know. What T’s father, by now retired but still with substantial contacts within the GRU, did learn (and thus T learned) was that the swap included all of T’s translations.

In other words, the CIA has in its possession the notes and reports of John McCain’s interrogators at the Hanoi Hilton, in both the original Vietnamese and translated Russian, showing collaboration with his Communist captors…

The small group of Senators and Congressmen who have been briefed by T have been unable to confirm with the CIA any details of its document swap with the GRU beyond an admission that such a swap “may have happened.” They are very nervous about pursuing the matter any further.

The Clintons are not nervous. They are utterly ruthless, and have buddies at Langley all too happy to help them.

Now, some comments from one who served.

In return for medical treatment at a civilian hospital, a privilege never granted to other injured POWs, McCain reportedly told NVA interrogators the name of hisaircraft carrier, how many Navy pilots had been lost, the number of planes in his flight formation, tactics used during bomb runs and the location of rescue ships in
the Tonkin Gulf.

Because of the revelations which McCain repeated in propaganda radio broadcasts,the North Vietnamese contemptuously nicknamed him “Songbird.”

On June 4, 1969, a U.S. wire service story headlined, “PW Songbird Is Pilot Son of Admiral,” described one of McCain’s radio recordings: “Hanoi has aired a broadcast in which the pilot son of the United States commander in the Pacific, Adm. John McCain, purportedly admits to having bombed civilian targets in North Vietnam and praises medical treatment he has received since being taken prisoner.”

During his six-week hospital stay and for months afterwards, McCain continued to cooperate with NVA interrogators. He made more radio broadcasts for the enemy
and met with foreign dignitaries, enjoying hot tea, coffee and cigarettes in posh settings while back at the Hanoi Hilton and other internment camps, his fellow POWs struggled to stay alive.

In one case,while meeting with Cuban journalist Fernando Barral, McCain voluntarily spoke in Spanish, even though he was obligated as an American POW to be evasive during their conversation. Had McCain feigned ignorance of Barral’s native language, the meeting might not have lasted five minutes.

Also in his 1999 autobiography, while admitting to accepting special favors from the enemy — i.e. drinking coffee and smoking cigarettes — McCain conveniently omitted the fact he had conversed with Barral in Spanish, a more serious Code of Conduct
violation.

True or not about the specific details of his collaborations, McCain said in Faith of My Fathers (page 198 of the hardcopy edition) that he revealed “information about my ship and squadron.” In the same paragraph, he claimed, “The information was of no real use to the Vietnamese.”

Well, that’s not what retired Army Colonel Earl Hopper believes.

A veteran of World War II, Korea and Vietnam, Hopper contends the information McCain disclosed was used by North Vietnam to fine-tune their air defense system.

Hopper’s son, Air Force Lt. Colonel Earl Pearson Hopper, was shot down over North Vietnam and later declared “Missing in Action.” As a result of his loss, the elder Hopper co-founded the National League of Families, an organization devoted to the return of Vietnam War POWs.

On March 25, 1999, two POWs, Ted Guy and Gordon Larson, told the Phoenix New Times they could not guarantee McCain had been tortured before his interrogations. Larson told the New Times, “Between the two of us, it is our belief, and to the best of our knowledge, that no prisoner was beaten or harmed physically in that camp [known as 'The Plantation']. My only contention with the McCain deal is that while he was at The Plantation, to the best of my knowledge and Ted’s, he was not physically abused in any way. No one was in that camp. It was the camp that people were released from.”

So, maybe “Songbird” is the Manchurian (or Vietnamese) candidate.

Musharraf says he will resign Pakistan presidency (CNN) Sad that Bush is not being pressed into the same action.

(CNN) — Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf announced his resignation Monday after weeks of pressure to relinquish power.

Pakistan’s Pervez Musharraf has until now stubbornly resisted pressure to quit.

Musharraf told the nation in a televised address that he would step down — nearly nine years after he seized power in a bloodless coup in 1999.

“I don’t want the people of Pakistan to slide deeper and deeper into uncertainty,” Musharraf said.

“For the interest of the nation, I have decided to resign as president,” he said. “I am not asking for anything. I will let the people of Pakistan decide my future.” Watch Musharraf resign »

He was expected to turn in his resignation to parliament Monday. Musharraf quit as the ruling coalition was taking steps to impeach him.

Local media reports said he had been granted “safe passage” out of the country.

Musharraf has been a keen ally of the West in the fight on terror, receiving billions in military aid from the U.S. and launching attacks on militant groups near the country’s border with Afghanistan. Watch more on Musharraf’s departure »

In a statement released by U.S. National Security Council spokesman Gordon Johndroe, President George W. Bush said it was committed to a “strong Pakistan that continues its efforts to strengthen democracy and fight terror.”

“President Bush appreciates President Musharraf’s efforts in the democratic transition of Pakistan as well as his commitment to fighting Al Qaeda and extremist groups,” the statement said.

Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said he had been a “friend to the United States” and one of the “most committed partners in the war against terrorism and extremism.”

I have yet to figure out if Condi is clueless or just a very bad liar (not a popular trait in the Boy George administration where lying is a key people skill).

For Pete’s sake, the guy was put in place by an army coup. That’s not “extremism”? Musharraf ruled by terror and extremism and good riddance. He was dealing with the Taliban and possibly al Qaeda for a truce; that was his war on terror.

Good riddance!

The real shame here is that Pakistan’s parliament is showing up the U.S. Congress in spades on how to deal with abuse of power and illegal activities by an executive power. Maybe we someday will embrace democracy here as Pakistan has now embraced it.

I hope somebody counts the silverware before Boy George leaves the White House.

Once again, lies and bigotry part of GOP agenda…Book of lies for McCain

Oh, I am sure John McCain is “shocked..Shocked I tell you” that the same dirty tricks Republican operative who slurred John Kerry’s wartime record has published some even more incredible and hate-filled lies about Barack Obama.

If he is shocked, why haven’t we heard anything? I mean his campaign has made an art of taking statements made in poor taste, off-color humor, hate speak and other “gaffes”, apologizing to make them go away and having it accepted. At the same time, McCain knows his appeal to the lowest common denominator has worked and the statement will stick with those for whom it was meant.

So, don’t expect Republicans to line up to denounce this filthy collection of lies and bigotry. If they do, they will shedding crocodile tears that someone who supports them could be so vile (and helpful).

Corsi Was Dropped From Unfit for Command Promotions Because of His Anti-Muslim, Anti-Catholic Comments. The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette wrote in an editorial, “Consider the book “Unfit for Command,” put out by a collection of partisans who have now made it acceptable for veterans to attack each other’s war records. The current National Review carries a piece decrying the bookstores that fail to carry “John O’Neill’s book.” This is curious in that the volume has a second author, but Jerome Corsi has dropped from the marketing because he has been revealed as the author of religiously bigoted remarks published on a Web site. Corsi not only considers Muslims to be pederasts, but he took the trouble to slam Catholic priests and refers to the pope as senile. Corsi, is to unite the United States, Mexico and Canada by erasing borders and creating a “North American Union.” That is the theme of Mr. Corsi’s new book, “The Late Great USA: The Coming Merger with Mexico and Canada,” which says the Bush administration’s ‘globalist agenda’ is leading to a merger of the countries through the implementation of policies and laws to open trade barriers and renovate the highway systems in anticipation of increased travel within the new megastate. Mr. Corsi said a growing number of Americans think the North American Union is being forced onto Americans. Government officials say the idea is no more than an unjustified conspiracy theory spread through the Internet. Ousted John McCain campaign co-chairman Phil Gramm is back with the campaign’s top advisers this weekend, as the campaign gathers top supporters for a series of briefings in scenic Aspen, Colo.

The former Texas senator stepped down from his position after he said in an interview last month that the country is in a “mental recession” and that we had become a “nation of whiners.”

Gramm was seated in the front row, with other top supporters, this afternoon as McCain addressed the Aspen Institute in a “conversation” with Walter Isaacson, president of the institute and a former editor of Time magazine.
